10/3/08 - 10/5/08 - PIKO Expedition

During Kealakehe Intermediate's fall break the Positive Youth Development Program of Family Support Services Youth Development Division worked with Na Kahumoku to have a camping trip out at the Kilauea Military Camp in Volcanoes National Park. This field trip was meant to be a way for students to experience not only another part of the island's natural environment but also as cultural experience where they can give homage to Pele, the goddess of the volcanoes.

Students spent their time on this three day, two night trip at KMC going on various hikes and making ti leaves for their trip to the Kalapana flow on the Puna side of the park. Students offered their ti leis to Pele at the end of the second night, and led a chant that showed respect to this powerful deity.
