Kaupulehu Forest Reserve
Kaupulehu is a nearby ahupua'a. Ahupua'a is an ancient method of land division. The tracts of land are usually narrow and run makai to mauka -- Ocean to Mountain. The Kaupulehu forest reserve is in the dryland forest level of the ahupua'a and is maintained by a number of different volunteer groups. Na Kahumoku has made a number of visits to this site to perform service. We offer big Mahalos to Yvonne Carter and Wilds Brawner and their co-workers for their mentorship while we are working there. The site is rich with native plants that have gained some scale due to the care of the community. It is immediately apparent when visiting this site that is distinct from the other dryland forest that surrounds it and which is very devastated by ungulates and forest fires and invasives. One of the main invasives at this site that we attempt to remove is fountain grass. In these photos you see us yanking it out with a passion!
